Athenaeum Bookstore is located in the heart of the city. The books for sale here include a wide variety of both Dutch and foreign literature, as well as books on academic topics, such as modern and classical languages. You'll also find a very up-to-date American and English literature department. Their Nieuwscentrum is located next door. Here, you'll find all manner of easy reading: newspapers from all over the world, travel guides, books on jazz and pop music, magazines, periodicals and more. Prices at Athenaeum are comparable to most bookshops in the area.
Athenaeum nowadays is one of Holland's largest independent bookstores. Athenaeum Booksellers was founded in 1966, opened its unique "Newscentre" in 1969, a branch in Haarlem in 1988 and started a small campus-store in the local city college in 1998. The Amsterdam bookshop on the lively Spui boasts a large stock not only in the literary field but also in various academic fields, such as (classical and modern) languages and the humanities, keeping in frequent contact with staff of both the University of Amsterdam and Amsterdam’s city college. About 40% of their stock is self-imported. Athenaeum is the preferred supplier of books to many Amsterdam-based cultural and academic institutions. Currently it operates in 4 different locations in the city.
